Think Pink – Breast Cancer Awareness

September 13, 2009

As Fall approaches, our thoughts turn to football season, back to school time and Halloween. Just as important, it’s time for Breast Cancer Awareness. The month of October is dedicated to thinking pink and increasing our awareness.

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. (CDC website)

For further information, contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the American Cancer Society.

Springtime Butterflies for a cause

March 24, 2009

Katelyn Joy Derstine was a 20 year-old vibrant girl from Sarasota, Florida who was active in her school and community. A tragic accident took her life, but her spirit lives on through a foundation set up in her name: Katelyn Joy Derstine Scholarship Fund.

The “Fly High Award”, established by her mother, was inspired by Katelyn’s fondness for butterflies, and is presented to young women who demonstrate academic excellence and a life-long dedication to selflessness.

These butterfly cookies are based on a drawing created by Katelyn:

Dear Mary, Wow! … I received the custom butterfly cookies last week and they are absolutely spectacular, delicious and amazingly just like Katelyn’s butterfly! I … cannot wait to call you for an event to make some more butterfly cookies! … thank you for your support and generous, compassionate gesture.
Warm Regards & Fly High

Snowflakes from Florida

December 7, 2008

When you live in Florida you learn to deal with the seasons. Searing heat in the summer, hurricane season from June through November and beautiful spring days. But, the most difficult adjustment of all is Christmas without snow. For a girl who grew up in the snowhills of New York, it used to feel like the Grinch passed through town! No snowflakes on my tongue, no snowballs thrown at siblings, no snow angels in the front yard.

I’ll admit that we still walk on the beach in December and ride our bikes around town (not so fun in the snow!) Things aren’t really so bad for us in the warm southern climate, and we’ve learned to watch for different signs of the upcoming Christmas holidays.

Wait ’till you see Santa’s surfboards!

There’s still a way to get snowflakes in Florida. Call us to find out how!
